Betony Dircks is an Australian artist, fashion designer and illustrator. Studio Betony is where she stores, organises and displays her work and creative explorations; a virtual, visual journal of sorts.
Betony completed her Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts - Fashion Design, in 2006. Since then she has worked in an array of fields including fashion and textile design, visual merchandising, illustration, fashion production and sourcing, graphic design, e-commerce and patternmaking.
With 15 years experience in textile and surface pattern design, Betony has a broad range of styles and techniques in her portfolio. Many patterns originate from line drawings, paintings and even tie dye. From simple designs for screen printing to detailed digital patterns, anything is possible.
With a keen interest in sustainability and concern for The Future of Planet Earth, Betony also has a preference towards working with brands that have sustainable and ethical tendencies. Her detailed knowledge and experience in working with organic and sustainable fabrics, zero-waste patternmaking and natural dyeing techniques will undoubtedly lead to her exploring these directions in future projects.
In 2011 Betony co-founded the clothing label ALAS with friend and long time collaborator Kelly Elkin. Over the course of 7 years they released 14 sleep and loungewear collections, all of which were ethically produced and made from sustainable materials, primarily organic cotton. The collections were sold via the ALAS online store and wholesale across Australia and internationally. Betony’s role within the business was diverse; in addition to co-designing the ranges and prints, she managed the off-shore sampling and production and was involved in e-commerce, graphic design and marketing.
Between 2016-2019 she also worked for The Ken Done Gallery in Sydney, as a textile designer, converting Ken’s colourful paintings into digital prints. She also managed local and off-shore clothing production and assisted with website, graphic design and e-commerce tasks.
Since 2020, Betony has shifted her focus to freelance textile design, surface pattern design and art licensing. Feel free to get in touch via email if you are interested in commissions/collaborations.
